Acciona Construction is a leading European construction company designing, constructing and managing buildings and civil infrastructures under sustainability principles. It has an international presence in more than 30 countries and its total turnover in 2014 was about 2,626 million €, employing 15,270 people.
It is part of Acciona Group (turnover in 2014 was 6,499M€ and employed 33,359 people) whose business lines are Energy; Construction, Water & Services and other activities such as Real State, Urban-Environmental Services, Logistic and transport. Acciona’s business strategy is tightly linked to sustainability and in recognition of the company’s efforts and commitments received in 2009 the recognition for Corporate Sustainability of the EU Business Award. The Technology and Innovation department is composed by a multidisciplinary and international team of about 140 highly qualified researchers from a wide range of disciplines. Main research areas are Energy Efficiency and Environmental Technologies, Nanotechnology, New Construction Materials, Products and Systems and ICTs,. It has laboratories of nanotechnology and advanced materials, RES and HVAC integration in buildings, ICT and Virtual Reality & Simulation, chemistry analysis as well as workshops for prototyping construction. Within the Technology and Innovation department, the Eco-efficiency and sustainability area counts with over 25 researchers working on technologies to improve the energy efficiency of the built environment, including building simulation and strategies to reduce the energy demand, integration of renewables and HVAC installations, new materials for improved envelope properties such as PCMs, energy control, and so on.
Acciona uses cutting-edge technology to develop and apply the most advanced materials, components, systems and solutions for sustainability and in particular for energy efficient concepts, design, construction, operation and recycling of buildings. It applies to new and retrofitted buildings while preserving a high indoor environment quality. Acciona has a wide experience in R&D projects both national and European level, even international projects beyond Europe. At European level, Acciona plays an active role in the European Construction Technology Platform being part of its Executive Committee, leading the Energy Efficient Buildings PPP (being member of the Partnership Board with the EC) and it is a member of reFINE (initiative on infrastructures) and ECTP’s Advisory Group on SMEs. It is also a member of ENCORD (European Network of construction companies for Research and Development), FIEC (European Construction Industry Federation), and it is a founding member of Building Smart Spanish Chapter (BSSC) and others ETPs construction / materials related. At international level, Acciona has recently joined to the Executive Committee of the “Caring for Climate” platform of the UN Global Compact initiative for participants seeking to demonstrate leadership on the issue of climate change.
Role in Project: Eco-efficiency and sustainability area of the research department of ACCIONA Construction has wide experience in the design and integration of technologies in buildings as in the design of new construction elements that include innovative materials. In the GREEN INSTRUCT Project, ACCIONA will take part on the constructive assessment in a real test building located in the South of Spain, end users requirements and dissemination activities.
